We have been having lots of fun with the game Snake Oil, Party Potion from Out Of the Box Games over the past several weeks.  It has been the game of choice whenever friends come over.  It is a win for everyone from the six-year-old to the adults!

Out of the Box Games Review
Snake Oil is available in two different versions, the regular version for ages 10 and up and Party Potion which is recommended for ages 8 and up.  We played with our six-year-old and he had a blast.  We had to read some words for him and occasionally help him out with combinations, but it was still fun for him.

To start, each player in the game is dealt 6 cards which they will use to create and describe their product to the customer when their turn comes around.  The type of customer is also determined by a set of cards. So in a game of Party Potion Snake Oil, every player gets one chance to be the customer and a chance to be a salesman during every round except the round when they are the customer.

Out of the Box Games ReviewThe customer cards are a varied stack of personalities and professions that might need some special piece of equipment to complete their job. We attempted to “sell our snake oil” to doctors, wizards, lawyers, fishermen, clowns, dogs, astronauts, teachers and toddlers and many other personalities as well.

You get to use two of your six snake oil cards to create a potion that would be of use to the character on the customer card. So your cards might give the words Putty, Jelly, Ribbon, Smoke, Sauce, and Skirt. You then use two of  those words to create a “snake oil” that the character must have.  Then you create an extemporaneous sales pitch 30 seconds in length to market your potion.  Using the above words, you could market Smoke Sauce to a Wizard.

For Example: Every Wizard knows that Smoke Sauce is a staple in every tool bag.  You should never leave home with out it because it adds a special touch to every concoction and can be used for smoke screens, disappearing tricks or giving your special sauce an extra kick.

If your potion is the favorite of the customer, you get to keep the customer card and everyone lays aside the two cards they used and draws two new ones.  You go around until everyone has had a chance to be the customer. The person with the most character/customer cards is the winner. Played this way, it is a very quick game.  However, on more than one occasion, it happened that the kids played through the entire deck with their friends because they were having so much fun!

This game involves a lot of laughter, creative learning, and quick thinking.  There is very little set up and can be played very quickly (or continuously if you are so inclined).  Snake Oil quickly became the go-to game for us and our friends.

It is available for purchase from Out of the Box Games for $14.99.
